Oct 10th, 2014
The Maryland Bass Nation hosted the 2nd Annual High School Team Championship on October 5, 2014, launching out of Smallwood State Park on the Lower Potomac River. There were fourteen teams representing the following high schools in the State: LaPlata High School, Linganore High School, St. Mary’s High School, Sherwood High School, Southern Garrett High School, and Sparrows Point High School.
The anglers were greeted with cold temperatures of 38° at check-in, but none seemed to mind the cold front, as they anxiously awaited a day of competition. The Lower Potomac has really been tough fishing lately and many figured it was going to be a low weight kind of tournament. Out of the fourteen teams competing, five teams brought one fish each to the scales and four teams managed two fish per team. Thus, it held true that low weights would come in.
Maryland’s high school team champions for 2014 are Joe McClosky and Morgan Winegardner of Southern Garrett. Their boat captain/coach was Brett Winegardner. They brought in two fish weighing 5.06 and Joe McClosky had big fish of the tournament weighing 3.08.
The 2nd place team of Mike Duarte and Richie Martin of Sparrows Point weighed in two fish at 4.91; their boat captain/coach was Richard Martin. The 3rd place team of Austin Ager and Johnny Marshall of LaPlata Bass Warriors weighed in two fish at 4.60; their boat captain/coach was Michael Nutter.
Both the 1st and 2nd place teams will advance to the B.A.S.S. High School National Championship in 2015. The 1st place team, Maryland’s High School Championship team of McClosky and Winegardner, will also advance to the 2015 B.A.S.S. Mid-Atlantic Divisional as part of Maryland’s adult state team. Congratulations and good luck to both teams!
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, to everyone who pitched in and helped make this event possible. I would love to mention everyone, but I know I would forget someone … so you know who you are and believe me when I say I really appreciate all of your help.
Boat captains/coaches - you guys are the ones that really should get all of the credit, because if it weren’t for you these teams would not be afforded the opportunity to fish. Thank you.
I would like to send out a special thank you to Michael Nutter and Evan Charles, two young men who fished the 2014 B.A.S.S. High School National Championship, representing LaPlata High School recently. They both were boat captains in this year’s tournament. In my book, you guys are awesome. It is so nice to see our young members that have come up through Maryland’s youth program, and after aging out of the program, give back and support our youth. Kudos to you both!
